The Polar A3:

Polar (the first company to make wireless
heart rate monitors) is still ahead in the field. It guides like a personal trainer and allows viewing previous workout data. It is extremely accurate and easy to use, and its display is bold enough to see while working out. The only drawback to this brand is that the chest strap and wrist monitor has to be sent back to Polar when batteries need replacing.

Nashbar also has same features as Polar 3 but is less expensive.

It is easy to use and doesn't have a lot of extra functions to confuse beginners. It includes an in-zone goal countdown timer, an easy-to-set-up target zone function with audible and visual alarms, and a calorie counter. The batteries are user-replaceable, and the Acumen is water-resistant up to thirty meters. There's also a women's version, designed to fit a woman's smaller wrists and torso.

Garmin Forerunner 301:

The Garmin Forerunner 301 is expensive, but that's because it has global positioning system (GPS) navigation ability, which tells how far and how fast person is going. It can be attached to PC-based software so analysis can be done as well and workouts can be planned. It has a 14-hour rechargeable battery, sport-based heart-rate profile, and an AutoLearn function, which adjusts heart rate zone as fitness improves. It is lightweight and easy to use. It uses coded transmission to eliminate interference. The Forerunner is not designed for continuous underwater use
